About Us
Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church was officially organized on Sunday, October 9, 1955, in response to a need to establish a Methodist Church in a fast growing community. Forty-nine members were officially received into membership on that Sunday. The congregation held its first Worship Service in the first facility (the current education building) on Sunday, December 4, 1955.
The current sanctuary was completed in the Summer of 1962 and the first Worship Service was held on July 8th of that year. By the Fall of 1987 a new annex-including a Fellowship Hall, Chapel, additional class rooms and the Commons Area-had been built and were in use.
Through the years Wesley Memorial has been a mission -centered congregation with special emphasis given to local missions. From its earliest beginnings the church has been a strong supporter of scouting, having one of the strongest and most active Boy Scout troops in the Statesville area. For twenty years the congregation has worked with Habitat for Humanity. Other local mission projects supported by the church are Fifth Street ministries, Hospice, Yokefellow, Pregnancy Resource Center, My Sister's House, the United Methodist Association for the Mentally Retarded (UMAR), Northview Elementary School, Dove House, Iredell Christian Ministries, etc. The Church is also heavily involved in mission efforts at the international level such as Samaritans's Purse.
In 2000 the church launched an alternative Worship Service and worship time. This Service, originally conceived as a Contemporary Service, offers a different kind of Worship style, meeting in the Fellowship Hall at 8:50 on Sunday mornings.
The church's Clown Ministry was reorganized in 2005 and maintains a busy schedule of programming in a variety of settings.
